The Calm Before the Storm
We're setting this blog off still in New York, with the opening game of the World Cup, Brazil v Croatia, only a few hours away. With its beautiful mix of nationalities from around the world, NYC knows how to party World Cup style. In a blog for Sports Illustrated, Nate Herpich took each game in from a different ethnic neighborhood. After Portugal beat Netherlands in the second round in 2006, Portuguese fans clogged Ferry St., jubilantly pulled police out of their cars, danced on police cars. Will we witness a similar celebration in the ruas of Brasil?

Tomorrow evening ... Friday the 13th... we fly on a verrryyyy long flight to Brazil with two grandmas and a baby.
We will be spectators at 4 games, the most important of which will be Ecuador vs France. With 3 Ecuadorian descendants and 2 Francophones in our clan it will surely be the most important game of the bunch.
What is still left on our to do list?
Last day flight change thanks to the worst-ever travel company: check!
Last day trip to Babies R Us: check!
Packing: after today's opening game!
Mentally blocking out the notion of 24 hour trip that will include a cab, a plane, a 9 hour layover, a bus transfer to another airport 2 hours away, another plane, and a taxi with a 1 year old, 2 grandmothers, 6 items of luggage and possible protesters and traffic: Check...uhmmmm!
Pra Frente Brasil!!

LOVE IT! You guys enjoy, be safe and take lots of photos! I'd love to see both "the good and the bad" if you can capture it!
Good to see you're already citing some pretty astute authors on the blog... Looking forward to following the celebration from Brazil!
Yay for grandmas and the inspiring babe (Go!) Eloise! Sounds like the start of an exciting journey... Be safe and enjoy!
